Enrol a Windows PC

About five minutes. You'll need Windows 10 22H2 or Windows 11 (Pro, Business, Enterprise or Education), your enrolment link, and to be signed in to the PC.

Windows Home isn't supportedMicrosoft only lets Pro, Business, Enterprise and Education join device management. It takes a few seconds to check your edition: see below.

Steps

  1. Open your enrolment link on the PC

Use the link your admin sent you. The page says Let's set up your device and picks Windows PC for you. If it doesn't, choose it under Which device are you setting up?

  2. Select Open Windows enrolment

Under Set up your Windows PC, select Open Windows enrolment. If your browser asks, choose to open Settings.

  3. Select Next, then Done

Windows fills in the details for you, so there's nothing to type. Select Next, then Done when it says you're connected.

  4. Leave it on for a few minutes

Keep the PC on and online while it checks in with Wardlark. If your company's policy turns on BitLocker, a small Wardlark helper installs itself and keeps the recovery key safe for your admin. You don't need to do anything.

The button didn't do anything

Open Settings, then Accounts, then Access work or school. Scroll down and select Enroll only in device management.

Windows asks for an email address, and sometimes a server address and a password. They're on your enrolment page: open The button didn't do anything under Set up your Windows PC and copy each one in as Windows asks:

  • Email address: not your own email. It tells Windows which organisation you're joining.
  • Server address, if it asks: only if Windows can't find the server by itself.
  • Password, if it asks: a code from the page, not your own password.

Then select Next, and Done when it says you're connected. Don't use the main Connect button: that's for Microsoft work accounts, which Wardlark doesn't need.

If the page doesn't show these details, select Open Windows enrolment again, or ask whoever sent you the link.

Windows Home: how to check and upgrade

Check your edition

  1. Open Settings, then System, then About.
  2. Under Windows specifications, look at Edition.

If it says Pro, Business, Enterprise or Education, you're ready. If it says Home, upgrade first.

Upgrade Home to Pro

In Settings, go to System, then Activation, and choose Upgrade your edition of Windows. You can buy Pro from the Microsoft Store, or enter a Pro product key your company already has. Your files and apps stay where they are, and the PC restarts once.

Ask your admin before buying: many businesses already have Pro licences through Microsoft 365 Business Premium or a reseller.

What changes on your PC

  • You may be asked for a longer password or PIN, and your screen locks after a few idle minutes.
  • The Windows firewall is switched on.
  • Your admin can see the model, serial number, Windows version, and whether BitLocker and the firewall are on.
  • Your admin can't see your files, email or browsing history.
  • If the PC is lost, your admin can lock it (it restarts and shows a message at sign-in) or wipe it (it resets to a fresh copy of Windows).

If something goes wrong

The page says "This link doesn't work any more". It may have expired, been switched off or been used up. Ask whoever sent it for a new one.

The page says "Your organisation can't add devices just now". There's nothing wrong with your PC. Let whoever sent you the link know, and once they've sorted it out, open the link again.
